Champagne Ridge Nest is a colonial style cottage about an hour and a half from Nairobi, set back from the edge of the Great Rift Valley. Two double bedrooms and a twin, all ensuite, sleep six, and the whole house is yours, self catered or with a cook. Days are for walking the land and long lunches on the verandah, and evenings end at the sundowner spot as the sun drops behind the far side of the Rift.

Why it's on Weaver

The walk through the acacias to the edge of the Rift is what stays with me. You come back to a long verandah lunch, a fire in the stone hearth and a house that feels lived in and loved.

Walk down to the sundowner spot at the end of the day and watch the sun set over the western edge of the Rift Valley.

Walking the land

The plot is large enough to walk for the views without leaving it. Pack a picnic and take it out under the acacias.

Cycling

The land is good for cycling. Bring your own bikes.

Hiking in the Ngong Hills

The Ngong Hills are close by for a longer day on foot.

Directions

Life at the house

The house is one big open-plan space under a high timber roof: a sitting room around a stone fireplace for cool evenings, a long dining table and a well-equipped kitchen. Most meals happen on the large verandah, looking out over the lawn, which is made for children to run about on, picnic blankets and long afternoons. Cook for yourselves, or have a cook come in to do it for you.

On the edge of the Rift Valley

The house sits on a large plot on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, set back a little from the drop. Walk out through the acacias for the view, or settle in with a cold drink and simply watch. In the evening, wander down to the sundowner spot to see the sun slip over the western wall of the Rift. Even the outside loo comes with a view.
